At the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, where tradition and innovation annually converge on the scenic shores of Lake Como, Italian design house Zagato unveiled its latest masterpiece: the Alfa Romeo 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato. The world premiere of this stunning concept car marked a historic continuation of one of the most revered partnerships in the history of automotive design.
The new 8C DoppiaCoda pays homage to Alfa Romeo’s iconic 8C lineage, which first roared to life in the early 1930s under the engineering genius of Vittorio Jano. With victories across legendary circuits—from the Mille Miglia to Le Mans—the original 8C carved its place in motorsport history. Zagato’s 2025 reinterpretation channels that spirit through a bold, aerodynamic form inspired by racing heritage and modern innovation.
Built on the platform of the 8C Competizione and realized in collaboration with a prominent Italian collector, the DoppiaCoda was designed and handcrafted entirely in-house by Atelier Zagato. The result is a concept car that does more than revive a classic—it evolves it.
“We may have just started a new chapter in Zagato design,” said Andrea Michele Zagato, President of Zagato. “With the 8C DoppiaCoda, we created a true fusion of round and truncated tails into a single body style—one that still preserves the functional benefits of both.”
This fusion takes the form of Zagato’s signature “Coda Tronca” (Kamm-tail) combined with a rounded, flowing rear—giving birth to the “Double Tail” concept. It’s a visual and aerodynamic innovation that builds upon lessons learned in the 2024 AGTZ Twin Tail project, which explored modular tail design. In contrast, the DoppiaCoda is a fixed yet fluid integration of seemingly opposing elements.
Chief Designer Norihiko Harada reflected on the philosophy behind the car’s silhouette: “When I draw a side view of a car, I imagine it rippling through the air. This car is a harmonious, repeating wave, like a Bach cantata—and cutting off that wave at the rear is Zagato’s traditional Coda Tronca.”
Visually, the 8C DoppiaCoda is a dramatic blend of art and engineering. A sharp character line rises from the front wheel, peaks at the rear fender, and abruptly terminates in the distinct Kamm-tail, now reimagined as a “wing tronca”—a design flourish that preserves aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining the elegance of a grand tourer. From the rear, a wing embedded within a circular contour gives the illusion of separation from the body, despite being visually integral when viewed in profile.
With this debut, Zagato completes a trilogy of modern Alfa Romeo tributes, following the 2023 Giulia SWB and earlier projects that honored the brand’s 6C and 1900 heritage. The 8C DoppiaCoda stands not only as a testament to more than a century of Alfa-Zagato collaboration but also as a beacon pointing toward the future of Italian automotive craftsmanship.
Following its public unveiling at Villa d’Este, the Concept will be delivered to its commissioning collector, who now becomes part of the living legacy that binds Alfa Romeo and Zagato—two names that continue to redefine beauty and performance for generations of enthusiasts.
