Alfa Romeo 156

The Alfa Romeo 156 Restyling by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

Originally launched in 1997 as the bold replacement for the Alfa Romeo 155, the Alfa Romeo 156 quickly became a symbol of Italian style and dynamic performance in the compact executive segment. Its distinctive silhouette and spirited driving characteristics helped cement its place as a standout in a competitive field. But by the early 2000s, it was time for a refresh—one that would preserve the 156’s spirit while updating its look for a new era. In late 2003, Alfa Romeo introduced a facelifted 156, this time handing the design reins to none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro, working through his renowned studio, Italdesign. This marked a notable shift, as the original design had been penned by Walter de Silva at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. Giugiaro’s reinterpretation breathed new life into the 156 while maintaining its essential character. The most prominent updates were to the front and rear fascias. Giugiaro’s version introduced a sharper, more aggressive nose with sleeker headlamps and a subtly reshaped grille, lending the car a more modern and dynamic presence. At the rear, the taillights were refined, and the overall posture of the car appeared more planted and assertive, aligning it visually with Alfa’s evolving design language. Alongside the styling update, Alfa introduced a new range-topping variant: the TI (Turismo Internazionale). This special edition brought enhanced performance and visual appeal, featuring sport-tuned suspension, larger alloy wheels, lower ride height, and an interior dressed in leather and aluminum trim—a package aimed squarely at the enthusiastic driver. The 2003 restyling ensured that the Alfa Romeo 156 remained competitive well into the decade, blending Giugiaro’s timeless design sensibility with the mechanical passion that Alfa fans had come to love. The result was a more refined, yet unmistakably emotional sports sedan—a true Italian classic, subtly reimagined for the modern road.
