Bentley B2

The Bentley B2 Coupé by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Bentley B2 Coupé, produced between 1994 and 1996, is a rare and highly individualized vehicle commissioned exclusively by the royal household of Brunei. Built in just 13 examples, the B2 was developed independently of Bentley Motors’ standard operations, with the project ordered directly by Brunei through Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche (PFSR) of Turin, Italy. As with several other Brunei commissions from the era, Rolls-Royce and Bentley’s factory involvement was minimal, limited to the supply of base chassis and mechanical components. The B2 was a comprehensively re-bodied and re-trimmed Bentley Continental R, distinguished by a design that reflected both British luxury and Italian styling discipline. Pininfarina was tasked with creating a coupé that maintained the grand touring identity of the Continental R while presenting an entirely new visual character. The result was a sleek, refined body with smooth, flowing lines and a distinctive front end, giving the B2 an appearance markedly different from its base model. The design aimed for an understated elegance tailored to the preferences of its high-profile client. Internally, the Bentley B2 retained the standard 6.75-liter turbocharged V8 engine of the Continental R, offering substantial performance in a relaxed, effortless manner. The powertrain and chassis were largely unchanged mechanically, though refinements to ride quality and customization of controls were likely incorporated at the request of the client. The car was conceived as a long-distance luxury tourer, emphasizing smoothness, refinement, and exclusivity over outright sporting dynamics. Each B2 was built to a unique specification, with no two examples being exactly alike. Bespoke interior fittings, custom trim materials, and exclusive color combinations were employed throughout the production run. Despite its exclusivity, the B2 project was not without its challenges. The first car delivered to Brunei reportedly received internal criticism from a member of the royal family, who found the car overly bulky and its cabin unrefined. As a result, it was retrofitted with the interior design from the Bentley B3—a layout that would later become one of the most favored configurations in the Brunei fleet. The B2 remains a little-known but notable chapter in Bentley’s history, representing a unique intersection of traditional British engineering and Italian coachbuilding. Chassis numbers for the B2 fall within the standard Continental R production range but can be identified by their sequential pattern and distinctive configuration. Examples include SCBZB04C5RCH52042 (1994) and SCBZB16C5TCH53184 (1996), among others. These vehicles continue to stand as symbols of an era defined by bespoke luxury and private automotive patronage on an unprecedented scale.
