Besturn B50

The Besturn B50 designed by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

Unveiled in 2009, the Besturn B50 marked a pivotal step for FAW (First Automotive Works) in expanding its passenger car range with a sedan that combined proven mechanical reliability with sharp, contemporary styling. Designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign, the B50 was positioned as an A-class performance sedan, though it was based on a modified B-class platform—specifically the chassis of the first-generation Mazda 6, still produced through the FAW-Mazda joint venture at the time. This synergy gave the B50 a solid engineering foundation, which Giugiaro built upon with a distinctive exterior design tailored to appeal to young professionals and style-conscious drivers. The B50 featured sleek proportions, with Giugiaro’s signature balance of elegance and dynamism. Notable design elements include the sculpted waistline, eagle-eye headlamps, and a bold front grille, which helped distinguish the model within a competitive market. The addition of 16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and a sporty rear treatment gave the B50 a confident, road-ready stance. Inside, the cabin emphasized comfort and simplicity, with a driver-oriented layout, ample legroom, and a clean dashboard design. Though the interior leaned toward understated functionality, materials and finishes were of a higher standard than typically seen in the segment, reflecting FAW’s aspirations to move upward in the market. Under the hood, the B50 was powered by reliable combustion engines, offering a smooth and efficient driving experience. While not a high-performance vehicle in the traditional sense, its refined ride, responsive handling, and sporty aesthetic helped define a new identity for the Besturn brand—one that blended practicality with visual flair. The B50 quickly became FAW’s most successful Besturn model. In 2013, it sold over 62,000 units, and in 2014, that figure rose to more than 72,000, cementing its place as a crowd favorite in the domestic Chinese market. The Besturn B50 proved that performance-inspired design and reliable underpinnings could coexist beautifully—an accessible sedan with the style of something far more aspirational.
