The Legend of Ferrari and Pininfarina’s Partnership: When Enzo Met “Pinin”
How a secret dinner, a bold promise, and a young Sergio Pininfarina led to six decades of Ferrari design greatness. This is the origin story every gearhead needs.
The Ferrari 375 MM Coupé with chassis 0450AM.
The Ferrari 375 MM Coupé 0450AM was completed in July 1954, but its delivery was delayed due to its low priority within Ferrari’s competition department. The car was finally handed over to Bao Dai, the last Emperor of Vietnam, in the spring of 1955. This particular 375 MM Coupé was distinctively finished with a metallic blue exterior and a red leather interior, crafted by Pininfarina. It was registered with the number 06 IT 10. Over the years, 0450AM underwent several modifications. The original engine eventually failed and was replaced with the engine from Bao Dai’s 410 Superamerica. In 1960, further changes were made to the car’s bodywork. The original Spyder body was swapped out for the shell from a 250 GT Berlinetta, chassis number 0723GT. This Berlinetta had suffered a minor fire, and its repaired single-louvre body, along with the dashboard, was transferred to the Ferrari 375 MM Coupé 0450AM. The re-bodied car was repainted in blue with a silver roof, giving it a fresh appearance. In 1968, Bao Dai sold the modified 375 Mille Miglia to Hans and Fritz Schlumpf, prominent collectors known for their extensive collection of classic cars. The changes and restoration work that 0450AM underwent over its lifetime reflect the dynamic history and evolving nature of classic automotive restoration.
