#0312

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8 Boattail Tourer chassis 0312 by Cesare Sala.

Vehicle Overview

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Boattail Tourer by Cesare Sala, chassis number 0312, was constructed in 1927 on the standard long-wheelbase variant of the Tipo 8A chassis. The Tipo 8A was introduced by Isotta Fraschini in 1924 as the successor to the Tipo 8 and remained in production until 1931. It was designed primarily for custom bodywork by specialist coachbuilders and positioned as a high-performance luxury automobile. The mechanical configuration of the Tipo 8A consisted of a straight eight-cylinder engine, cast in aluminium, with overhead valves actuated by pushrods. The displacement measured 7,370 cubic centimetres. Output varied by tuning specification but generally ranged between 115 and 160 horsepower. The transmission was a non-synchromesh three-speed manual unit. The chassis featured semi-elliptical leaf springs at both axles and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes assisted by a servo mechanism. The drivetrain layout followed a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The bodywork on Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8 0312 was commissioned from Carrozzeria Cesare Sala of Milan. The firm, formerly known as Taramella & C., had longstanding associations with Isotta Fraschini and was among the preferred suppliers of formal and sporting coachwork for the marque. The Boattail Tourer configuration employed a tapering rear deck and open body design, constructed in aluminium over a wooden substructure. The design was characterised by sweeping fenders, a sharply sloped rear, and minimal external ornamentation. Seating was arranged for four occupants in two rows. A folding windscreen and concealed convertible top were standard. Total production of the Tipo 8A chassis is estimated at approximately 950 units. Of these, a small proportion were bodied by Cesare Sala, and the boattail configuration appears to be unique to this chassis. Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8 0312, engine number 662, was originally supplied to the British market via Isotta Fraschini’s London agency. Subsequent ownership history is not comprehensively documented.
