Maserati 320S

The Maserati 320 S Concept Car by Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

Unveiled in 2001, the Maserati 320S was more than just a concept—it was a bold statement of intent. Designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign in collaboration with racing equipment specialist Sparco, the 320S embodied Maserati’s vision of returning to the American market with a tribute to its storied motorsport past, while hinting at future performance models. The project was envisioned as a potential one-make racing series car, balancing raw competition spirit with elegant Italian design. Based on the Maserati 3200 GT, the 320S was reimagined as a barchetta-style sports prototype, distinguished by a dramatically asymmetrical layout: the driver’s side featured a small, minimalist windscreen, while the passenger side was completely enclosed and faired over. This unique styling choice, along with the aerodynamically faired roll-over bar, single central rearview mirror, and open cockpit configuration, created a striking visual and aerodynamic profile, directly inspired by Maserati’s legendary racers of the 1950s and 60s. Its blue and white livery paid homage to the classic American racing colors worn by Maseratis that once triumphed on circuits like Sebring and Road America. It drew lineage from icons such as the 200S, 300S, 450S, and especially the Tipo 60/61 “Birdcage”, known for its radical lightweight chassis and minimalistic, purpose-built design. Though never destined for production, the 320S served as a preview of the upcoming Maserati Spyder, and more importantly, as a conceptual bridge between heritage and modernity. It showcased Maserati’s commitment to returning to form in international markets, particularly the United States, where the brand’s identity was historically tied to race wins and Italian craftsmanship. The Maserati 320S remains a stunning example of how motorsport DNA and visionary design can merge in a concept that celebrates the past while carving out a bold path for the future.
