Vehicle Overview
The Roewe 350, launched in 2010, represents a landmark achievement for SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation)—the company’s first independently developed vehicle, built from the ground up without foreign platform licensing. Designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign, the Roewe 350 embodied SAIC’s bold ambition to craft a world-class compact sedan tailored for both the Chinese domestic market and global export. First introduced as the Roewe N1 concept at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show, the 350 evolved into a clean, modern small family car that blended European styling with practical engineering. It was aimed at middle-class Chinese consumers seeking spaciousness, affordability, and a touch of prestige in their daily driver. The final production model maintained much of the concept’s refined silhouette and showcased Giugiaro’s hallmark attention to proportion, balance, and understated elegance. The Roewe 350 featured a sleek, cab-forward design, enhanced by thin A-pillars and a low beltline that maximized forward visibility and gave the cabin a bright, airy feel. One of the car’s standout traits was its rear-seat space, which was unusually generous for a vehicle in its class, making it ideal for family use or chauffeur-driven comfort—a popular feature in the Chinese market. Under the hood, the 350 used efficient combustion engines paired with manual or automatic transmissions. While it wasn’t built for performance, its smooth ride and practical power delivery made it well-suited to urban and suburban driving. The 350 also shared its platform with the MG 5 hatchback, allowing SAIC to streamline production and broaden its model lineup with a global strategy in mind. Sold internationally as the MG 350, the Roewe 350 marked a new era for Chinese carmaking, combining independent engineering, global design partnerships, and a strong focus on comfort and usability. It remains a symbol of SAIC’s evolution from assembler to innovator—a milestone in China’s automotive journey.
