Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet.
Vehicle Overview
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet, internally designated as Type 14, was produced between 1957 and 1974 as an open-top companion to the coupé variant introduced in 1955. Conceived through a collaboration between Volkswagen, Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin, and the Osnabrück-based coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, the model embodied a confluence of German engineering and Italian formalism. While the mechanical basis was sourced entirely from the contemporary Volkswagen Beetle, the Karmann Ghia presented a distinct aesthetic proposition, positioned as a refined alternative to the utilitarian origins of its underpinnings. The Cabriolet variant debuted in 1957 and was manufactured almost exclusively by Karmann at its Osnabrück facility. Construction involved significant hand-finishing, with body panels welded and smoothed manually, resulting in a level of craftsmanship uncommon in series-production vehicles of the period. The design featured restrained curvature and continuous surface transitions, with minimal ornamentation. Its proportions favored elegance over aggression, distinguishing it from contemporaneous sporting models. Mechanically, the vehicle utilized a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, with displacement increasing over the course of production from 1,192 to 1,584 cubic centimeters. Output ranged from 30 to 50 horsepower, depending on model year and market specification. The transmission remained a four-speed manual, operating through a cable-actuated clutch and rear-wheel-drive layout. Suspension, drum brakes, and other running gear were largely carried over from the Beetle, preserving reliability and ease of maintenance, albeit at the expense of dynamic performance. Interior accommodation was modest. The front seats provided adequate comfort for two passengers, while the rear bench remained suitable for limited use. The folding fabric roof, manually operated, integrated into the rear deck without recourse to mechanical assistance, reflecting the vehicle’s simplicity of conception. Production totaled approximately 80,881 units for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet variant. Additional examples were assembled in Brazil from 1962 to 1975 under Volkswagen do Brasil, though these employed localized adaptations. Surviving chassis, such as #1469398 (1969 model year), have appeared in private collections and concours exhibitions, notably in North America and Western Europe. The Karmann Ghia Cabriolet persists in collective memory as an exemplar of stylistic moderation, built upon utilitarian foundations but rendered in a language of restrained elegance and lasting materiality.
