Auto Avio 815

The Auto Avio 815 by Touring Superleggera: the first fully developed car by Enzo Ferrari.

Vehicle Overview

The Auto Avio 815 was the first car to be fully designed and built by Enzo Ferrari. Legal issues with former associates Alfa Romeo prevented Ferrari from creating the Ferrari marque. The Auto Avio 815 raced at the 1940 Brescia Grand Prix, where both entries failed to finish due to engine problems. One of the cars was later scrapped, while the other is currently part of the Righini collection in Italy. The bodywork called “Torpedino Brescia” was built and designed by Carrozzeria Touring using Itallumag 35, an aluminium/magnesium alloy, and was done in long, flowing forms with integrated wings. The bodywork weighed 119 lb (54 kg). The complete car weighed 625 kg (1,378 lb) and attained a maximum speed close to 170 km/h (110 mph).

The Auto Avio 815, Enzo Ferrari’s inaugural masterpiece, is a testament to automotive history. Ferrari birthed this racing marvel in the face of legal hurdles with Alfa Romeo. Though the 1940 Brescia Grand Prix witnessed its engine troubles, it left an indelible mark. One of these pioneers faded into history, but the other resides in the Righini collection, an automotive relic in Italy. Crafted by Carrozzeria Touring with Itallumag 35, an aluminum/magnesium alloy, its “Torpedino Brescia” bodywork epitomized elegance. At 625 kg, it was a lightweight racer, soaring close to 170 km/h. This vintage gem is a reverberating echo of Ferrari’s beginnings, a symphony of innovation that still resonates in the hearts of enthusiasts.
