The Autobianchi G31 coupé by OSI.
The Autobianchi G31 prototype is the demonstration of a new direction, that is, of an enhancement of the research activity in the field of design by a large car manufacturer, for a mass production – outside the elite of the main coachbuilder. Designed by Pio Manzù and built by coachbuilder OSI, the application of aerodynamic principles was of great importance for this study. A feature of the bodywork is the extremely profiled section of the front. By eliminating front surfaces perpendicular to the axis of penetration, a very favorable form of aerodynamic penetration was achieved. The design of the rear part was set according to the aerodynamic principle of the truncated tail without taking the theory to extreme consequences as on some prototype racing cars in which the truncated tail surface corresponds to the surface of the maximum section. In the interior design, particular attention was paid to the study of the elements competing with passive safety. Dashboard, door trim, roof, pillars, the entire passenger compartment of the Autobianchi G31, are covered with polyurethane foam panels.
