BMW 3 Series Klapp Top
Bertone’s cabriolets have always played an important role in the history of the automobile. In 2000 he capitalised on this tradition in a new project with Edscha, a leading company in the production of fold-away roofs. The idea was to apply the motorised hoods which were in widespread use on top range spiders to the traditional four-seater.
And this is how the KlappTop came into being. It was a folding electric roof designed for a classy modern cabriolet, the BMW 320. The KlappTop is a fold-away hard top based on five mobile panels, the last of which, at the back, incorporates the rear glass windscreen. The mechanism relies on 13 leverage points per side, and is powered by two hydraulic cylinders. It also includes an automatic blocking mechanism which comes into operation when the roof is fully open or closed. The back shelf is composed of five panels: two lateral sliding panels and one central one with two lateral elements hinged onto it. The system is powered by four electrical motors, two for each side. The main opening, which incorporates the original opening of the boot, is hinged onto the rear end of the body, and is operated by two hydraulic cylinders. This sophisticated system transformed the BMW 320 into a perfect blend of saloon and cabriolet.
