Vehicle Overview

The Bugatti EB218, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, marked the evolution of Bugatti’s design language and engineering prowess. Building on the foundation laid by its predecessor, the EB 118 coupé, and the EB 112 prototype, the EB218 represented a significant stride forward for the Bugatti brand. Under the ownership of the Volkswagen Group since 1998, Bugatti underwent a transformation, with the EB218 being a tangible result of this new era. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro of Italdesign, the four-door saloon carried a distinct aesthetic reminiscent of Bugatti’s iconic designs from the 1930s. The lengthened body, measuring 5375mm, showcased a refined interpretation of the original EB 112 prototype from 1993, with distinctive changes in the curvature of the bumpers, lights, and bonnet. Powering the Bugatti EB218 was a formidable Volkswagen-sourced W18 engine, a 6300 cc powerhouse delivering a staggering 550 horsepower through a longitudinal front engine configuration. The unique engine design featured three in-line six-cylinder banks arranged in a W-shape, with three of the 18 forged connecting rods sharing a common crankpin. This engineering marvel translated to exceptional performance on the road. To harness the power efficiently, the EB218 incorporated permanent all-wheel drive borrowed from the Lamborghini Diablo VT, ensuring optimal traction and control. The aluminum multi-link chassis and a five-speed automatic transmission further complemented the performance-oriented setup. The EB 218’s design paid homage to Bugatti’s heritage, drawing inspiration from the elegance of the Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic. With a wheelbase of 2710 mm, a length of 5349 mm, a width of 1998 mm, and a height of 1240 mm, the vehicle boasted a commanding presence on the road. Weighing in at 1888 kg, the EB 218 blended cutting-edge technology with the timeless elegance that Bugatti is renowned for, solidifying its status as a worthy successor to the legacy of the EB 112.
