The Daewoo Espero: The genesis of this mid-size sedan started in 1986 when the Korean manufacturer entrusted Bertone with the task of designing a car with an original and “rupturing” line that could usher in the new industrial course. Bertone showed Daewoo’s top management several sketches of an old Citroën Xantia design that had been discarded by Citroën itself, and this sketch appealed greatly to Daewoo, which bought the rights to it from the French manufacturer and began work on putting it into production. This design was modernized by Bertone and engineered by the Daewoo research and development center in Korea within four years; the body retained the original three-box shapes that were almost flat and extremely aerodynamic (with a drag coefficient of 0.29), and by the spring of 1990 the new Daewoo sedan was ready for production the new car. The name chosen was Espero, from the Spanish for “hope.” The Daewoo Espero debuted on the Korean market in August 1990 and production started simultaneously at the Bupyeong plant
