Fiat 522 C Cabriolet Royale

This Fiat 522 C was built by the Fiat Carrozzerie Speciali with a Cabriolet Royal bodywork, a top-of-the-range and exclusive convertible version. This type of car was built in about 400 examples. Of these, only 4 surviving specimens are known.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 522 is a “medium-high” range car produced from 1931 to 1933, it descended from the Fiat 520, the progenitor of the 6-cylinder Fiat. The 522, presented in 1931 at the 4th Milan Auto Show, was sold in three different versions, distinguished by a different length of the chassis. They were called 522 C (short version), 522 L (long version) and 522 S Sport (sports version), which had a chassis with an intermediate wheelbase between Fiat 522 C and Fiat 522 L and was presented at the 1932 Geneva Motor Show. The 522 was the first in Italy to be equipped with dual circuit hydraulic brakes and a 4-speed manual gearbox, synchronized in third and fourth gear. It had an in-line six-cylinder engine with side valves, 2516 cm³ of displacement, for 52 hp (65 hp in the S version). The 522L reached a top speed of 95 km / h, the 522C the 105 km / h and the 522S the 115 km / h. A CSS version was also made, with more elegant finishes and an even more powerful engine. The ignition was battery operated, the car was rear-wheel drive and was sold as a sedan (two and four doors), torpedo (four doors), convertible (two and four doors) and coupe (two doors). A total of 7360 were built (of which 4706 “C”, 1922 “L” and 722 “S”). With this car and with the Fiat 524, the Turin car manufacturer inaugurated a new logo, rectangular with a red background and golden letters, used in 1931 and 1932.The Fiat 522 was also used successfully in racing, although its sporting history is less known and documented of other cars. A 522 at the 1933 Mille Miglia, finished 41st overall, driven by Pietro Ferrero and Renzo Monaco. Within the fruitful relationship between Fiat and coachbuilders there is a long, little-known parenthesis, which extends between 1910 and 1931 In those years, a “Fiat Carrozzerie Speciali” functioned, based in Turin in via Madama Cristina. Fully equipped and state-of-the-art, the Fiat inhouse coachbuilder, of course, Fiat as its first customer, but there was no lack of work orders from external companies. A world of bodies, forging, finishing and above all elegant and refined bodies, with high-sounding names of foreign origin, such as the “Cabriolet Royal”. In 1925 the Department was transformed into the “Carrozzerie Speciali” under the direction of Rodolfo Schaeffer, gradually becoming an increasingly organic part of Fiat itself. Operational until the early 1960s, the “Carrozzerie Speciali” built famous models like the 8V and 1100 S.
