Frazer Nash Motto Coupé
In April 1960, the this Frazer Nash Coupé coachbuilt by Motto was sold by Vicentinito Gabriele Merrone of Milan.
Vehicle Overview
Colin Crabbe tracked the car down in 1976, thinking that he had found the ex Lurani, Targa Florio-winning car, which had also been rebodied in Italy as a coupé. He imported it into the UK in June 1976, still with the Rocco Motto body fitted and painted red. It was rebuilt, repainted silver and registered in the name of his wife, Fiona, with the number FP 2. The car was advertised by Crabbe in July 1979: 1950 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica Chassis, Coupé by Motto Turin. Excellent condition. It was re-registered EEW 21C and sold to David Penney in December 1979. The coupé body was removed and the chassis rebuilt as a Le Mans Replica by Crosthwaite & Gardiner, using a new body made by Peels of Surbiton. Penney purchased an old saloon, registered XOU 3, from David Wicks in 1980 and transferred that number to the Frazer Nash. The completed car was painted blue and exhibited at the Midland Motor Museum from 1982. It was sold at Sotheby’s on 3 July 1989 to Michael Fisher Ltd, and then to Victor Gauntlett in May 1990. It was then sold to Bill Clark of New Zealand in November 1990. He kept the car for 18 years before selling it to Peter Giddings of California in mid-2008. The Rocco Motto body was sold in the mid 1980s to David Brown of Lincoln, who used it to build a special with home-made box-section steel chassis and 4-litre Rolls Royee engine, as used in the 1960s Vanden Plas Princess R saloon. Confusingly, a Nash type grille and badge were added and the car registered TH 6400, transferred from a 1937 Frazer Nash-BMW.
