Innocenti C Coupé

The Innocenti C Coupé by OSI.

Vehicle Overview

The Innocenti C Coupé by OSI faced challenges despite the initial success of its predecessor, the Innocenti Spider. While the Spider sold well in Italy, with production hitting 13 cars per day in 1962, it struggled to compete against the more affordable Austin-Healey Sprite in international markets. As newer competitors entered the scene and the Sprite underwent modernization, sales of the Spider declined sharply. In response to this downturn, between March 1965 and September 1966, Innocenti embarked on an in-house development project to create a 2-door Sports Coupé based on the same 1100 cc engine found in the “S” Spider model. Although the “S” Spider had enjoyed reasonable success, particularly in Italy and the US, it never matched the sales figures of the earlier 950 Spider, primarily due to pricing and stiff competition in the Italian market. This new two-door Coupé was christened the Innocenti Coupé or simply “C,” and it was designed by Sergio Sartorelli at OSI. The Coupé featured entirely new bodywork that was wider and longer than that of the Spider. Additionally, the wheelbase was extended by 150 mm to 2,180 mm (85.8 in), allowing for improved stability and interior space. One significant improvement was the reworked floorpan, which facilitated the mounting of seats lower in the chassis compared to the Sprite. This adjustment enhanced cabin comfort by reducing the feeling of confinement. Despite these enhancements, only 794 units were produced before production ceased in 1968. The story of the Innocenti C Coupé reflects the challenges faced by niche manufacturers in an increasingly competitive market. Despite its promising design and engineering improvements, the Coupé struggled to find a foothold amidst fierce competition and shifting consumer preferences. However, its limited production run ensures its status as a rare and sought-after collector’s item for enthusiasts of classic European automobiles.
