Vehicle Overview

The Lamborghini Silhouette, a striking creation by Bertone, stands as a testament to the brand’s resilience during the challenging era of the mid-1970s. Born out of economic difficulties and a need for strategic innovation, the Silhouette was based on the earlier Urraco but underwent a distinctive transformation, setting it apart with its angular styling and the distinction of being the first Lamborghini to feature a targa top roof. Lamborghini, facing economic constraints and a crisis in the sports car industry, sought a cost-effective solution to revive its fortunes. Leveraging the existing Urraco assembly lines, the goal was to enhance the sporty essence of the Urraco while minimizing overhead costs. The Silhouette, emerging as a result, underwent a thorough restyling that showcased its evolution into a targa-top configuration. The conversion to a targa-top necessitated significant changes, including the removal of rear seats, upper headliner, and chassis stiffening to compensate for the absence of a roof. The side profile, however, retained familiarity with the inclusion of plastic rear pillars framing the horizontally positioned matte black engine hood. A removable black plastic sunroof, easily stowed behind the seats, added versatility to the design. Externally, the Silhouette boasted new features such as a front spoiler, complemented by a black resin bumper concealing the oil cooler and front brake air intakes. Enlarged wheel arches, lowered tires, and new alloy wheels contributed to the car’s dynamic aesthetic. Inside, a redesigned dashboard stretched towards the driver, embodying a blend of functionality and modernity. Powering the Silhouette was a 3.0-liter all-aluminium alloy Lamborghini V8 engine positioned transversely behind the driver. The car’s performance figures were nothing short of impressive, with a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds, a 0 to 100 mph dash in 16.1 seconds, and a top speed reaching 260 km/h (162 mph). Debuting at the 1976 Geneva Auto Show, the Lamborghini Silhouette marked a pivotal moment in the brand’s history. As an evolution of the Silhouette, Bertone later introduced the Jalpa, a model that bore a striking resemblance but achieved even greater success. With only 54 units produced, including 12 with right-hand drive, and 31 known to exist today, the Silhouette stands as both a symbol of Lamborghini’s resourcefulness during challenging times and a testament to its enduring commitment to automotive excellence.
