SsangYong Rexton

The SsangYong Rexton designed by Italdesign Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

The SsangYong Rexton’s first generation, introduced in 2001, marked a significant leap forward for the South Korean automaker. Developed with the Y200 design code, this model aimed to replace the aging Musso off-road vehicle, offering a technologically advanced and modern design courtesy of Italdesign. SsangYong’s collaboration with Mercedes-Benz played a crucial role in this transformation, as the Korean manufacturer acquired the production license for the side member platform of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Presented in South Korea, the SsangYong Rexton was available in both five-seater and seven-seater configurations. It catered to diverse preferences with a manual gearbox equipped with a reduction gear or a 4-speed sequential automatic featuring steering wheel controls. The engines, a testament to the Mercedes-Benz influence, showcased a commitment to performance. In Europe the SsangYong Rexton made its debut in 2002, boasting two engine options. The first, a 3199 cc petrol engine, was paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission with a reduction gear. The second option was a 2874 cc diesel engine, available with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission, both featuring a reduction gear. The year 2004 witnessed a facelift that brought about significant enhancements. A third engine option, a 2696 cc diesel, replaced the older 2.9 diesel. Alongside this engine upgrade, a new 5-speed sequential automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz made its debut, becoming an optional feature for both the 3.2 and 2.7 engine configurations. The 3.2 engine also received Euro 4 certification as part of these updates. The SsangYong Rexton’s design, overseen by Italdesign, showcased a sleek and modern aesthetic. Built on a platform with longitudinal beams borrowed from Mercedes-Benz, the vehicle boasted a coefficient of aerodynamic resistance at 0.39. This design choice underscored the Rexton’s commitment to both luxury SUV trends and off-road capabilities, catering to the dynamic needs of the market.
