BAIC 900

The BAIC 900 designed by Fioravanti.

Vehicle Overview

The BAIC Concept 900 is a full-size luxury sedan prototype developed by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC) in partnership with the Italian design firm Fioravanti. It was formally presented at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, conceived as a design manifesto intended to explore the stylistic and technological potential of BAIC’s upper-market aspirations. The vehicle represents an attempt by the manufacturer to establish a distinct visual and conceptual identity within the global premium automotive segment. The exterior styling of the Concept 900 adheres to a formal, yet contemporary aesthetic. Its proportions follow traditional front-engined, rear-wheel-drive luxury architecture, characterized by an elongated hood, short front overhang, and a balanced cabin set rearward. The body surfaces are cleanly sculpted with sharp character lines and subdued ornamentation. A large chromed grille with a complex geometric pattern anchors the front fascia, flanked by slim, angular LED headlamps. The vehicle’s silhouette is further defined by a gently tapering roofline and pronounced shoulder line, culminating in a visually grounded rear section with integrated light clusters and dual exhaust outlets. A notable feature is the use of gullwing doors, which provide dramatic vertical opening and improve lateral access to the cabin. The interior design reflects a minimalist and technologically forward ethos. The layout is dominated by a central touchscreen interface, intended to replace conventional controls with capacitive inputs. Materials consist of leather, brushed metal, and polished wood, arranged to reflect a premium yet understated environment. Although the vehicle’s mechanical details were not formally disclosed, it is understood that the Concept 900 was built upon a platform related to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class architecture, a result of BAIC’s existing joint venture with Daimler AG in the Chinese market. This engineering base provided a credible underpinning for the prototype’s proportions and potential drivetrain configurations. The BAIC Concept 900 remained a one-off study, but it informed the design direction of subsequent models within the BAIC group, particularly those marketed under the Senova brand. It is regarded as a significant example of cross-cultural collaboration in automotive design, illustrating the convergence of Chinese industrial ambition and Italian design tradition during the early 21st century.
