The Bandini Dora designed by Giugiaro: the Barchetta of 2020.
The Bandini Dora represents a modern reinterpretation of the traditional barchetta, developed by Fabrizio and Giorgetto Giugiaro’s GFG Style in collaboration with Bandini Automobili. Conceived as a forward-looking concept, the Dora merges classic open-top styling with advanced materials, engineering, and contemporary safety solutions—bridging past and future through design. At the heart of the Dora’s concept is the desire to maintain the purity and lightness of a windshield-free sports car while incorporating necessary protection. Inspired by the Halo safety structure used in Formula 1, Giugiaro envisioned a structural super-arch that seamlessly integrates into the body design. This element eliminates the need for traditional pillars, creating a flowing line that enhances aerodynamic efficiency and provides protection for both driver and passenger. The exterior design is defined by fluid proportions, a low and elongated bonnet, and a signature vertical headlamp design shaped like a lightning bolt. These lights not only frame the front end dramatically but also integrate daytime running and indicator functions, extending toward the windshield for visual continuity. Prominent air intakes and sculpted wheel arches underscore the Dora’s sporty stance and performance orientation. At the rear, the structural arc continues into an active aerodynamic spoiler, while horizontal taillights mirror the front’s visual motif. The combination of sharply defined surfaces and smooth transitions is a hallmark of Italdesign’s approach, achieving both functional and stylistic goals. Access to the interior is provided by automated scissor doors, revealing a cabin characterized by asymmetry and minimalism. A central carbon fiber structural tunnel separates the driver from the passenger, reinforcing the chassis while emphasizing a driver-centric environment. The dashboard is free of physical switches, with all functions managed via a touchscreen-integrated steering wheel and digital display, including controls for infotainment, navigation, and vehicle systems. The fixed carbon and leather seats offer adjustable height and backrests, while ambient lighting along the dashboard accentuates the interior’s elegant geometry. The use of premium materials and innovative design elements throughout the Dora defines it as a true concept car—one that explores the potential of design to reshape the sports car experience for the modern era.
