The OM 665 SS MM Superba by Carrozzeria Sport.
Vehicle Overview
The OM 665 SS MM Superba was a limited-production sports automobile manufactured by Officine Meccaniche (OM) between 1928 and 1932. It represented an evolution of the earlier OM 665 Superba and was developed specifically for competition in major endurance and road racing events, including the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. The vehicle was powered by an inline six-cylinder engine initially displacing 2.2 litres, later increased to 2.3 litres. The powerplant featured a Roots-type supercharger and an overhead valve cylinder head with finned surfaces for improved cooling. Output varied between approximately 65 and 95 horsepower depending on the specific configuration. The chassis utilized a shortened wheelbase measuring 2,790 millimetres, with suspension consisting of semi-elliptical leaf springs front and rear. Braking was provided by drum brakes on all four wheels. Coachwork was supplied by several Italian coachbuilders, including Carrozzeria Sport, producing spider and tourer body styles with two- or four-seat layouts. The designs adhered to contemporary aerodynamic and sporting principles, emphasizing lightweight construction and functional openness for competition. The OM 665 SS MM achieved notable competition results throughout its active period. Chassis number 6651095 secured a class victory and fifth overall at the 1930 Mille Miglia with drivers Aldo Bassi and Carlo Gazzabini. In the same year, the model placed sixth at the Targa Florio, piloted by Nando Minoia, and ninth at the Irish Grand Prix with Giulio Ramponi. The following year, the vehicle driven by Giuseppe Morandi and Archimede Rosa finished third overall at the 1931 Mille Miglia, trailing two Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 models. Production estimates suggest approximately 25 units of the OM 665 SS MM were built. Several surviving examples have been restored and remain active in historic motor racing and concours events. The model is recognized for its combination of advanced engineering, supercharged performance, and competitive achievements, contributing to OM’s legacy in early 20th-century motorsport history.
