Renault Dauphine Coupé Allemano

The Renault Dauphine Coupé Allemano (1956).

Vehicle Overview

The Renault Dauphine Coupé by Carrozzeria Allemano was a limited-production variant of the standard Dauphine saloon, realised circa 1956. The project was based on the Renault Dauphine Type R1090 platform, a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive model originally introduced by Régie Nationale des Usines Renault in 1956 as a successor to the 4CV. The coupé configuration by Allemano represented a stylistic reinterpretation rather than a mechanical modification, adhering to the core structural and mechanical principles of the base car. The vehicle employed the standard Dauphine mechanical layout. It was powered by an 845 cubic centimetre inline four-cylinder engine with overhead valves, producing approximately 31 metric horsepower at 4,800 rpm. Power was delivered to the rear axle through a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension consisted of independent front and rear units with torsion bars and hydraulic dampers. Drum brakes were fitted on all four wheels. The monocoque construction of the base model was retained, with modifications made to the upper bodywork. Carrozzeria Allemano of Turin executed the bodywork in steel, replacing the standard four-door saloon configuration with a two-door fastback coupé form. The roofline was lowered, and the rear deck shortened. The design incorporated a revised front fascia with integrated headlamps and a more streamlined profile. The side windows were reshaped to follow the revised roof contour, and the greenhouse was compacted to yield a sportier silhouette. The resulting vehicle maintained the general proportions of the Renault Dauphine Allemano but introduced an aesthetic more aligned with contemporary Italian design trends of the mid-1950s. Production figures remain uncertain; however, evidence suggests that only one or very few examples were constructed. The car was exhibited at the Turin Motor Show and possibly intended for limited promotional or prototype use. No surviving production or registration data specifies chassis or engine numbers associated with the Allemano-bodied variant.
