The Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti.

Vehicle Overview

The Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti is an exceptional example of Italian automotive ingenuity, combining racing performance with cutting-edge aerodynamic design. Conceived in 1939, this unique model is a product of collaboration between Siata and Viberti, with the visionary engineer Luigi Rapi leading the design process. The car epitomizes the spirit of Italian racing specials from the pre-war era, utilizing Fiat’s reliable mechanical components as a foundation while pushing the boundaries of style and engineering. The Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti is famously known as the Berlinetta Aerodinamica, a term reflecting its streamlined, aerodynamic profile reminiscent of an airplane wing. Rapi’s innovative approach, inspired by his work on the aerodynamic Lancia Aprilia for Colonel Mario Leoncini, resulted in a lightweight, dynamic vehicle weighing just 560 kg. The car’s sleek lines and fluid silhouette were achieved through advanced aeronautical concepts, marking it as a pioneer of lightweight racing construction. At its heart, the Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti features a modified Fiat 508 C chassis, paired with a Siata-tuned 1089cc Fiat 508 C engine. This combination of agility and power was essential for competitive racing, offering an ideal balance between speed and handling. Viberti, renowned for its craftsmanship, realized the bodywork in collaboration with Rapi, applying aerodynamic insights obtained from wind tunnel tests at the Polytechnic of Turin. The result was a car that not only looked fast but performed remarkably on the track. The story of this particular model is deeply linked to its original owner, Arialdo Ruggeri of Gallarate, who ordered the car from Siata. Ruggeri, who would later co-found the Scuderia Milan with his brother Emilio in 1946, was passionate about motorsport. The Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti achieved significant success at the Gran Premio di Brescia delle Mille Miglia, where Ruggeri and his co-driver Dansi finished in sixteenth place overall and sixth in the up to 1100 cc class of the Sport category. It is also believed to have competed in the 1947 Mille Miglia, though details about the race remain unclear. After a period of intense racing activity, the car’s journey took an unexpected turn. Following an attachment order from the Civil and Criminal Court of Milan, it remained in storage from 1951 to 1971, safeguarding its originality and heritage. Today, the Siata 1100 Coupé Viberti is celebrated not only for its remarkable engineering and racing pedigree but also as a rare embodiment of Italian automotive artistry from the late 1930s. It remains a coveted piece among collectors, admired for its blend of performance, design, and historic significance.
