BMW 3200 Michelotti
Chassis
Giovanni Michelotti was inspired by the U.S. style in the late 1950s when he designed the body of this BMW 3200 Michelotti Vignale.
Vehicle Overview
The BMW 3200 Michelotti body was manufactured by Scaglietti, and the model was assembled by coachbuilder Vignale. This prototype was build on chassis 70184 of a BMW 507 and in contrast to the curved series model, the 3200 Michelotti Vignale is more angular with straight lines and small fins. The red-brown metallic painted prototype with hard top was unveiled at the 1959 Turin Motor Show. When the vehicle was auctioned at Christie’s on April 21, 1986, it turned out that it was in the possession of the Earl of Chichester from 1980 to 1986, it was then purchased by the American collector Oscar Davis for £ 50,760, who had it restored and painted red. The Blackhawk Museum probably bought it in 2001, and it was in its collection until the end of 2004 before BMW Classic took over the car.
