Simca-Barreiros Minibus
On April 3, 1966, Barreiros managers went to Pininfarina with the idea of developing a small sports car based on a Simca 1000 – a model built under license by Barreiros. But as soon as they arrived, the news came: the founder Gian-Battista Pininfarina had just died in Lausanne.
Vehicle Overview
With all hopes dashed, the Spanish delegation decided to bounce back. Through the intermediary of the Spanish embassy in Italy, they immediately contacted the other competitors: Bertone, Ghia, and Fissore. Instead of a coupe, the latter proposed to design a van. Aldo Sessano but also Trevor Fiore (at the time Trevor Frost) submitted advanced ideas. Two prototypes were tested and presented in July 1966 but using the RWD of the Simca 1000 as a base, the accessibility showed its limits, being possible only through the side doors. The project was finally canned and these prototypes were used as service vehicles in the Spanish factory.
