Abarth 2000 SE 027

The Abarth 2000 SE 027 designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Abarth 2000 SE 027 was a sports prototype constructed in 1974 through a collaboration between Abarth & C. and Carrozzeria Pininfarina. Intended as a technical and stylistic evolution of Abarth’s earlier Group 6 two-litre competition cars, the SE 027 was designed as an experimental platform to integrate advanced aerodynamic concepts and lightweight construction methods, and was among the final prototype vehicles developed under the direct influence of Carlo Abarth prior to the company’s absorption into Osella. The chassis featured a semi-monocoque layout, comprising a tubular steel frame integrated with lightweight body panels. The bodywork, designed and executed by Pininfarina, reflected recent aerodynamic developments obtained through the use of wind tunnel testing. The form was characterized by a long, low nose, smooth flanks, and a tapered tail, with integrated ducting and a minimal frontal area. The open cockpit was positioned far forward in the chassis to optimize weight distribution and visibility. The overall height and width were kept to a minimum to reduce aerodynamic drag. The engine was a four-cylinder, inline, naturally aspirated unit displacing 1,946 cubic centimetres. It employed dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, and was equipped with a Lucas mechanical fuel injection system. Power output was approximately 280 horsepower. The engine was mounted longitudinally in a mid-rear position and was paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The vehicle employed fully independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and disc brakes on all four wheels. Dry weight was reported at approximately 575 kilograms. The SE 027 was presented as a static display at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show on the Pininfarina stand. It was not entered into competitive events, and no additional examples were produced. The model was not homologated for any specific racing category. The Abarth 2000 SE 027 remains a singular exercise in prototype engineering and aerodynamic study, representing the intersection of Pininfarina’s design language and Abarth’s performance engineering. It illustrates the evolution of lightweight sports prototypes in the early 1970s and the increasing role of aerodynamic refinement in chassis and body integration.
