The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale by Bertone.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was another important car for the relationship between Bertone and Alfa Romeo. The encounter between the originality and bold spirit of the Turin bodywork manufacturer and the natural sportiness of the Alfa marque produced one of the most original and interesting coupés of its time. At the 1957 Turin Motor Show Bertone presented the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, on the short base of the Spider version. This was a coupé with enhanced lines and performance respect to the Giulietta Sprint, and 2,554 of them were produced until 1965, earning widespread admiration. The Giulietta SS stood out for its tapering aerodynamic lines which give it an almost “aeronautical” look, distinguishing it from the Giulietta Sprint. The innovative bodywork was teamed with a racy 1290 cc. engine (which was already fitted in the Giulietta Sprint), taken up a notch to 100 Hp, and able to get the car over 200 km/h: speeds made possible by the aerodynamic lines and the lightweight body. From 1962 onwards the Giulietta SS was produced with a 1570 cc. engine as well.
