BAIC C51X

The BAIC C51X designed by Bertone.

Vehicle Overview

The BAIC C51X is a concept compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) developed by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC) and unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. This concept vehicle was part of BAIC’s strategic initiative to modernize its product lineup and expand its presence in both domestic and international markets. The exterior design of the C51X was crafted by the renowned Italian design firm Gruppo Bertone, under the direction of American designer Mike Robinson. The styling featured streamlined headlights, a curved front bumper, and a compact silhouette, reflecting Bertone’s influence in creating a modern and appealing aesthetic. The design aimed to combine European styling cues with Chinese automotive trends, appealing to a global audience. While the C51X was presented as a concept, it laid the groundwork for future production models. The vehicle was based on BAIC’s “M-trix” platform, which is derived from the Saab 9-3 platform acquired by BAIC in 2009. This platform choice provided a solid foundation for performance and safety features. The concept was equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing approximately 163 horsepower and 225 Nm of torque. Transmission options included a six-speed manual gearbox, with power delivered to the front wheels. The positive reception of the C51X concept influenced BAIC’s decision to proceed with production models inspired by the design. The concept directly led to the development of the Senova X65, which debuted at the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show and was later rebranded as the Beijing X5. These production models retained key design elements from the C51X, such as the overall body shape and styling cues, while incorporating updates to meet market demands and regulatory requirements. The C51X represents a significant milestone in BAIC’s evolution, showcasing the company’s commitment to design innovation and collaboration with international partners. The concept’s influence on subsequent production vehicles underscores its role in shaping the brand’s identity and product offerings in the competitive SUV market.
