Bentley Azure
The Bentley Azure Cabriolet by Pininfarina.
Vehicle Overview
The Bentley Azure made its debut in March 1995 at the Geneva Motor Show, sharing its platform with the Continental R model launched in 1991. Initially, production started slowly, with only nine cars completed in its first year. However, by 1996, full production ramped up significantly, resulting in 251 cars finished. Pininfarina played a crucial role in the two-year transformation of the Continental R into a full four-seater convertible, manufacturing the shell and soft-top at their Italian factory using parts sourced from the UK. Final assembly took place at Crewe. Unlike some convertibles, the Azure omitted a roll-bar, necessitating extensive chassis reinforcement. Measuring 210 inches in length and weighing 2,608 kg (5,750 lb), the Azure impressed with its imposing size, designed to convey presence and comfortably accommodate four adults. Powering the Azure was Bentley’s 6.75-litre V8 engine, initially rated around 365 PS (268 kW; 360 hp), though official power figures were not disclosed by Rolls-Royce and Bentley at the time. Later enhancements included a new engine management system by Zytek, boosting power to 390 PS (287 kW; 385 hp) and 750 N⋅m (553 lb⋅ft) of torque. This power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a modified General Motors sourced four-speed 4L80-E automatic transmission. Despite its size and weight, the Azure boasted impressive performance figures, reaching 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 241 km/h (150 mph). The Azure’s electrically powered convertible top, made from thick fabric, was another distinctive feature designed and manufactured by Pininfarina, contributing significantly to the car’s overall cost. At its introduction in 1995, the Azure carried a price tag of £215,167, which was £22,590 more than the Continental R. From 1999 onwards, the Azure was offered in “Mulliner” trim, allowing for bespoke customization during the build process, which varied pricing depending on customer specifications. Towards the end of its production from 2002 to 2003, a special “Final series performance” edition was offered, with only 62 units produced. The last right-hand-drive model sold was Chassis no. CH01228, while the very last Azure remained at the Crewe plant, marking the end of an era for this distinguished Bentley model.
