BMW 3200 Michelotti
Chassis
The BMW 3200 Michelotti by Carrozzeria Vignale.
Vehicle Overview
The BMW 3200 Michelotti, a distinctive prototype, was a collaborative effort involving several renowned automotive craftsmen. The body was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and manufactured by Scaglietti, while the assembly was carried out by the esteemed coachbuilder Vignale. This unique model was built on the chassis 70184 of a BMW 507, a base known for its elegance and performance. However, the 3200 Michelotti Vignale diverges significantly from the curved lines of the series production model, featuring more angular lines and small fins that give it a distinctive and bold appearance. The prototype, painted in an eye-catching red-brown metallic hue and fitted with a hardtop, made its debut at the 1959 Turin Motor Show. Its striking design and unique characteristics drew considerable attention, marking it as a standout among the vehicles showcased at the event. The car’s journey through the decades is as interesting as its design. On April 21, 1986, the vehicle was auctioned at Christie’s, where it was revealed to have been owned by the Earl of Chichester from 1980 to 1986. During the auction, the prototype was purchased by American collector Oscar Davis for £50,760. Davis, recognizing the car’s historical and aesthetic value, had it meticulously restored and repainted in a vibrant red, further enhancing its allure. In 2001, the Blackhawk Museum, known for its collection of rare and classic automobiles, likely acquired the BMW 3200 Michelotti. The car remained a part of the museum’s collection until the end of 2004, when BMW Classic took over its ownership. This acquisition by BMW Classic ensured that the prototype would be preserved and maintained to the highest standards, allowing it to be appreciated by future generations. The BMW 3200 Michelotti is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its creators. Its journey from the 1959 Turin Motor Show to its restoration and eventual inclusion in BMW Classic’s collection highlights its significance in automotive history. The prototype not only represents a unique design philosophy but also encapsulates a rich history of ownership and admiration by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
