Ferguson R5 4WD Michelotti

The Ferguson R5 4WD Michelotti prototype.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferguson R5 4WD Michelotti is a prototype estate car developed in the early 1960s by Harry Ferguson Research Ltd., a company established by Irish engineer Harry Ferguson to advance four-wheel-drive (4WD) technology for road vehicles. This vehicle represents a significant milestone in automotive engineering, combining innovative drivetrain systems with contemporary Italian design. Building upon earlier prototypes such as the R3 and R4, the R5 featured a front-mounted, 2.0-liter flat-four engine designed in-house, paired with a full-time 4WD system known as the “Ferguson Formula.” This system incorporated a mechanical center differential capable of detecting wheel slip and adjusting torque distribution accordingly, enhancing traction and stability. Additionally, the R5 was equipped with the Dunlop Maxaret anti-lock braking system, one of the earliest implementations of anti-lock brakes in passenger vehicles. The bodywork of the R5 was designed by renowned Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, who provided the vehicle with a modern and streamlined estate car profile. The design emphasized practicality and aesthetic appeal, featuring a spacious interior and a low rear floor for improved cargo accessibility. Michelotti’s contribution ensured that the R5 not only showcased advanced engineering but also met contemporary standards of automotive design. Two prototypes of the R5 were constructed: R5/1, finished in grey and later fitted with a Paxton supercharger, and R5/2, finished in blue. Both vehicles served as testbeds for Ferguson’s 4WD technology and were instrumental in demonstrating the potential of such systems in everyday road cars. Despite their innovative features, the R5 prototypes did not enter mass production, primarily due to the lack of interest from major automotive manufacturers at the time. The legacy of the Ferguson R5 4WD Michelotti lies in its pioneering integration of full-time 4WD and anti-lock braking systems in a passenger car. These technologies would later become standard in many vehicles, underscoring the R5’s role as a forerunner in automotive safety and performance advancements.
