The Ferrari 166 MM Pininfarina one-off chassis 0346M.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 166 MM Pininfarina chassis #0346M is a significant example of Ferrari’s history, being the only 166 MM bodied by Pininfarina. This car is a special model, classified as one of the 13 upgraded “tipo” 166 MM/53 cars. The car’s unique features include its right-hand drive configuration and its Pininfarina coachwork (job no. 12239). Originally, the chassis and engine were numbered to 0146E before delivery. The car’s first major race outing was in August 1953, at the 1000 km Nürburgring, where it suffered a mechanical failure and ran out of fuel, leading to a DNF (did not finish) result. The race was driven by Kurt Zeller and Walter Zeller, with the car number #68. Later that year, on October 25, 1953, it competed in the Tour Automobilistique du Belgique where Kurt Zeller drove the car to #56. The Ferrari 166 MM Pininfarina continued to participate in various events throughout 1954, including the Tulpen Rally in Zandvoort where it was driven by Kurt Zeller again. However, after Zeller’s death in 1957, the car passed through a series of owners, including a German car dealer and a US military person. Over time, the original engine failed and was replaced, while the car had various owners across the United States, including Greg Miller from Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 1974, and Gerry Sutterfield from West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1979. In 1999, the original engine was located by Wayne Sparling, who eventually gave it to Gerry Sutterfield. In 2001, the car was being offered for sale at $900,000, though it was in need of restoration. DK Engineering of Watford, UK purchased the car in 2002 and began restoring it. The restoration process included repainting the car in its original colors: dark blue with a silver top. The Ferrari 166 MM Pininfarina underwent further restoration and display during the 2000s. In 2005, it was offered by DK Engineering and later sold to Henk P.N. Koel in the Netherlands in 2005. In 2006, it was presented at Concorso d’Eleganza, Villa d’Este and won Best of Show at the Concours d’Elegance at Paleis Het Loo in the Netherlands. The car also participated in various Ferrari events, including the 60 anni Ferrari concours in 2007, and Modena Motorsport Trackdays at Nürburgring in 2009. In 2017, the car was presented to Ferrari Classiche at the Ferrari factory in Maranello for certification, and by December 19, 2017, it was officially Ferrari Classiche Red Book Certified.
