The Ferrari 206 S Dino Spider by Drogo.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari Dino 206 S was a sports prototype racing car produced by Ferrari in 1966 as part of its Dino program. It was developed to compete in the FIA Group 4 category for sports cars with engine displacements up to two liters. A total of 18 examples were constructed between 1966 and 1967, with bodywork designed and built by Carrozzeria Sports Cars (commonly referred to as Drogo), under the direction of Piero Drogo. The car was powered by a 1,987 cc 65-degree V6 engine, derived from Ferrari’s Dino Formula 2 engines. This engine, designated Tipo 233 S, featured dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank and three Weber twin-choke carburetors, though at least two examples were equipped with mechanical fuel injection. The engine produced approximately 220 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and was mounted longitudinally in a mid-rear configuration. Power was transmitted through a five-speed manual transaxle. The chassis was a tubular steel frame with independent suspension all around—double wishbones at the front and a combination of lower wishbones and top links at the rear. Disc brakes were fitted on all four wheels. The lightweight construction and mid-engine layout gave the 206 S a competitive advantage on technical circuits and in hillclimb events. Chassis number 032 was delivered to Italian industrialist Corrado Ferlaino and was fitted with one of the two known fuel-injected V6 engines. It participated in the 1967 Mugello Grand Prix and several Italian hillclimbs. Chassis 026 was campaigned by Scuderia Filipinetti and entered the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring and the Nürburgring 1000 km. Despite damage caused by a fire at the Nürburgring, it was later restored. Chassis 010 was configured as a Berlinetta, one of only three such closed-body examples. Chassis 034 also had an active hillclimb career. The 206 S served as a developmental platform for Ferrari’s mid-engine sports prototypes and contributed to the transition away from front-engine layouts in competition cars. It is historically significant for its technical configuration, limited production, and participation in major international and national racing events during the mid-1960s.
