Until the 1950s, Ferrari built a rather limited number of convertibles, unlike coupes, where production was quite high. The few units built of the first ones were built to satisfy particular requests of selected customers, or they were prototypes. With the introduction at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show of the first series of this model, bodied by Boano, Ferrari set a milestone in the history of its production, presenting a veritable convertible. It was designed by Pininfarina, and this first series of the “250 GT Cabriolet” was marketed in 1957 and 1958. The model was built using production lines similar to those used for the 250 GT Coupé; with the latter it shared the chassis, V12 engine, suspension, brakes, gearbox, transmission and steering. A production standardization was also set for this model, but there were nevertheless some customized models for selected customers. The normalization was carried out right from the assembly of the car body, the work of Pininfarina. The car bodies were manufactured by the latter, then sent to Ferrari for mechanical completion. Of the first series, 40 left-hand drive units were built except two, which had right-hand drive. The first model produced, with a left-hand drive, was purchased by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, in September 1957, for his honeymoon.
