The Legend of Ferrari and Pininfarina’s Partnership: When Enzo Met “Pinin”
How a secret dinner, a bold promise, and a young Sergio Pininfarina led to six decades of Ferrari design greatness. This is the origin story every gearhead needs.
Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Coupè Speciale 1187GT.
The Ferrari 250 GT PF Coupe Speciale, chassis 1187GT, is a one-off version of the 250 GT Coupe, built with a design by Pininfarina resembling the 410 SA body style. It features a five-window cabin and air outlets in the fenders, finished in a striking metallic blue-green with a black interior. This special car was first shown at the 1959 Geneva Motor Show before being delivered in May 1959 to Ing. Emanuele Nasi of Torino, Italy. Nasi, who was married to Aniceta Agnelli, was a notable figure in the Italian industrial elite, giving the car historical significance from the start. In the years that followed, the car changed ownership several times. Howard C. Boerner Jr. of Berkeley, California, owned the car before it passed to Dr. Michael Russell in Brentwood, California, by 1977. Then, in 1986, it was acquired by Greg Garrison, a collector in Studio City, California. Garrison restored the car fully and had it displayed at several prestigious events, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2017, where it was entered in the M-1 class. After Garrison’s passing in 2018, the car was sold at the Gooding & Co.’s Pebble Beach auction for $1.1 million, which included the buyer’s premium. It was then bought by Lorenzo Zambrano, a collector based in Monterrey, Mexico, who had the car completely restored by Bob Smith Coachworks in Gainesville, Texas. The car earned accolades at Cavallino Classic, winning both a Platinum Award and the Judges Cup in January 2023. In January 2019, Ferrari 250 GT Speciale 1187GT was sold again at Gooding & Co.’s Scottsdale auction for $2.365 million, including the buyer’s premium. Shortly after, it was listed by Copley Motorcars in Needham, Massachusetts, for sale. This Ferrari remains a standout example of automotive craftsmanship and historical importance, especially due to its unique design and prestigious ownership lineage.
