The Legend of Ferrari and Pininfarina’s Partnership: When Enzo Met “Pinin”
How a secret dinner, a bold promise, and a young Sergio Pininfarina led to six decades of Ferrari design greatness. This is the origin story every gearhead needs.
The Ferrari P6 designed by Pininfarina.
The Ferrari P6 by Pininfarina, described as “the mother of all berlinettas” by Paolo Pininfarina, grandson of the company’s founder, is a 1968 prototype, unveiled at the Turin Auto Salon, that has remained somewhat in the shadows. However, it is considered the missing link between the Dino 206/246 models and the iconic Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer. Leonardo Fioravanti, an engineer-designer who joined Pininfarina in 1964, played a crucial role in the creation of the P6. From the front, the car can almost be mistaken for a regular production model due to its sharp, elongated nose and Carello rectangular lights. These features previewed the design language that would characterize the Ferrari lineup during the 1970s. Distinctive elements include the fenders that protrude above the very low hood, almost suggesting that the engine is located elsewhere. These stylistic cues seemed to lay the groundwork for a pure Ferrari coupe, but many aspects of the P6 were quite unusual, such as the steeply inclined windshield that flows into a very long roofline, almost in a “fastback” style. Compared to other Ferrari prototypes of the era, the P6 was much more understated, with elegant, fluid lines. It was designed to house a 3-liter V12 engine mounted in a mid-rear position, paired with a five-speed gearbox. The long ducts sculpted on both sides were intended to channel air to the V12, while the engine compartment would also receive airflow from the thin front grille through a tunnel integrated into the underbody. At the time, however, Enzo Ferrari was averse to the idea of mid-rear-engined cars, and thus the P6 remained solely a styling exercise. Nevertheless, it contained the seeds of future Ferrari berlinettas. The Berlinetta Boxer of 1971 is an example, even though it might seem completely different at first glance. In essence, the Ferrari P6 by Pininfarina was a visionary prototype that bridged the gap between Ferrari’s past and future, influencing the design and engineering of later models while showcasing innovative stylistic and aerodynamic elements.
