Ferrari Pinin
Chassis
The Ferrari Pinin was a one-off concept car created by Italian-design studio Pininfarina, to celebrate the design studios 50th anniversary. Discussed by Enzo Ferrari as being turned into a production model, the proposal was dropped and the car remains a singular concept model, the first four-door Ferrari ever built.
Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari Pinin, a landmark creation unveiled at the prestigious 1980 Turin Motor Show, marked a significant milestone for Pininfarina as it celebrated its 50th anniversary amidst a whirlwind of anticipation and speculation. Rumors had swirled regarding a groundbreaking concept car for Ferrari, and indeed, to the delight of enthusiasts and automotive aficionados alike, the world witnessed the debut of the first-ever four-door Ferrari. At the helm of the legendary design firm was Sergio Pininfarina, now steering the company founded by his father, Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, toward new horizons. In a poignant tribute to the visionary patriarch, the car was christened the Ferrari Pinin. Crafted under the watchful eye of design maestro Leonardo Fioravanti and skillfully executed by Diego Ottina, the Pinin emerged as a testament to Pininfarina’s prowess and Ferrari’s innovation. Setting itself apart with a wheelbase extended by five centimeters compared to the Ferrari 400 and the 365 GT4 2+2, the Pinin exuded an aura of futuristic elegance. Its design language spoke volumes, boasting a hood of strikingly low profile and windows meticulously flush-mounted and tinted, seamlessly melding into a continuous expanse of glass from C-pillar to C-pillar. Among the Pinin’s distinctive features were the ‘multi-parabolic’ lights, a marvel of engineering: These lights, integrated seamlessly into the body, utilized three lenses, with the central one mirroring the body color, while retractable windscreen wipers and turbine-inspired angled five-spoke wheels further accentuated its aerodynamic silhouette. Inside the cabin, opulence reigned supreme, with sumptuous tan Connolly leather adorning every surface, complemented by state-of-the-art onboard computerization controlling an array of passenger comfort features. Rear occupants were treated to generous legroom and individual controls, including a secondary radio for personalized entertainment akin to contemporary luxury vehicles. While the Ferrari Pinin dazzled as a vision of automotive ingenuity and luxury, its destiny diverged from the path of mass production. Fiat, Ferrari’s parent company, steered resources toward the development of smaller vehicles like the Fiat Uno, relegating the ambitious four-door Ferrari project to the annals of automotive history. Nevertheless, the Pinin continued to captivate audiences, gracing prestigious showcases such as the 1980 Los Angeles Auto Show and Carrozzeria Italiana in 1981, before finding a new home in the collection of Jacques Swaters, revered head of the Ecurie Francorchamps Belgian racing team and close confidant of Enzo Ferrari. In 2005, the Pinin emerged once more, proudly exhibited at the Essen Motor Show as part of Pininfarina’s 75th anniversary celebration, a testament to its enduring legacy. Finally, in 2008, it passed into the hands of a discerning collector at RM’s Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione auction, securing its rightful place as an iconic symbol of automotive innovation and timeless design.
