Vehicle Overview
The Fiat 1100 Industriale Savio is a rare, coachbuilt variant of the Fiat 1100-103 light commercial vehicle, produced in 1959 by Carrozzeria Savio of Turin. Commissioned by the Italian Army, this unique model was transformed into a 9-seater minibus, tailored for personnel transport and light utility roles. Based on the Fiat 1100-103 Industriale platform—a robust, rear-wheel-drive chassis derived from the Fiat 1100-103 sedan—the Savio conversion featured an extended body with a high roofline and large side windows, enhancing interior space and visibility. The vehicle retained the front-end design of the standard 1100-103, while the rear was custom-built to accommodate additional passengers. Notably, some versions included a fabric sunroof, drawing stylistic parallels to the Volkswagen T1 Samba of the same era. The Fiat 1100-103 Industriale was equipped with a 1,089 cc inline-four petrol engine, delivering approximately 34 to 37 horsepower, depending on the specific version. This engine provided sufficient power for urban and light-duty applications, aligning with the vehicle’s intended use. Production of the Fiat Industriale was limited to approximately 50 units, reflecting its specialized purpose and bespoke construction. Today, only about 10 examples are known to survive, with one preserved in the Museo dell’Arma, underscoring its historical and cultural significance.
