Fiat 501 Torpedo Ballon
Giovanni Bertone specialised in building the “ballon ” with which open tourers of the Twenties were transformed into saloons; in part, it was the precursor of today’s hard top. The “ballon “, which was completely lined inside and covered with imitation leather on the outside, was popular among motorists of the day, who appreciated its aesthetics and versatility of use. The Fiat 501 was fitted with a Bertone “comfort ballon” as well as special winter protection for the radiator. The 501 was a fundamental model in Fiat’s production immediately after the First World War. Its four-cylinder 1460 cc engine produced 23 hp at 2600 rpm and took the car to a top speed of 70 km/h: 26,000 of them were built between 1919 and 1926.
