Fiat Babytaxi

The Fiat Babytaxi by Carrozzeria Boneschi.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat Babytaxi by Boneschi was a one-off concept vehicle constructed in 1992 on the Fiat Cinquecento platform. Developed by Carrozzeria Boneschi, the vehicle was presented at the 1992 Turin Motor Show as part of a series of proposals for urban mobility based on Fiat’s compact city car architecture. The Babytaxi was designed as a functional prototype to explore the use of small vehicles for urban taxi service, with emphasis on compact dimensions, interior accessibility, and ease of passenger ingress and egress. The vehicle was mechanically based on the standard Fiat Cinquecento, which employed a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The standard powertrain offered at the time included either an 899 cc two-cylinder OHV engine or a 1,108 cc FIRE inline-four petrol engine. Both were coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox. The platform was unmodified in terms of engine placement, suspension layout, and drivetrain configuration. Coachwork modifications were executed by Carrozzeria Boneschi. The vehicle featured an asymmetrical door layout, with a single front-hinged door on the left for the driver and a wide, forward-sliding door on the right to facilitate passenger access. The roofline was raised over the rear compartment to increase vertical clearance, and the interior was reconfigured to accommodate multiple passengers in a compact footprint. The exterior retained several panels from the production Cinquecento but incorporated bespoke bodywork elements including extended glazing and squared rear proportions. The Babytaxi was designed in-house at Boneschi; no individual stylist is formally credited. The project was not intended for production, and only one unit was constructed. No chassis number was issued beyond the base Fiat identification, and no ownership records have been documented. The concept remained in Boneschi’s possession for display purposes and has not appeared in public or private vehicle collections. The Fiat Babytaxi by Boneschi is representative of early 1990s Italian coachbuilding efforts to reinterpret mass-market automotive platforms for specialised applications. While it did not proceed beyond the concept phase, it reflects a period in which asymmetrical design solutions and modular access systems were under consideration for urban transport scenarios. The vehicle is known through period photography and event documentation.
