Ghia G230 S Coupé
After building cars for both American and Italian customers, Ghia wanted to start producing cars on its own. This G230 S is one of the first cars built entirely by Ghia.
Vehicle Overview
The Ghia G230 S Coupé starting point was the platform of the Fiat 2300 S, but the Turin coachbuilder wanted to use entirely updated components. The body style was created under the direction of chief designer Sergio Sartorelli, who had already designed the legendary VW Karmann Ghia. The chassis was of fundamental importance, so Ghia turned to “Gilco”, the company that had designed and built chassis for Ferrari. At Gilco, engineer Gilberto Colombo designed a tubular frame that followed the construction pattern of his majestic Maserati Birdcage. The Fiat engine, disc brakes, gearbox and suspension had been updated by Abarth. Ghia’s intentions were to involve the two companies. Abarth and Fiat, in the eventual mass production of the car. The first G230 S appeared at the Turin Motor Show in 1963. It seems that Ghia has built at least two Ghia G230 S Coupé prototypes (a silver and this green one), for international motorshow. Unfortunately the car never reached production, and the only existing prototype is the green one, preserved in its original condition.
