The Hafei Saibao is a compact four-door sedan developed by Chinese automaker Hafei and styled by Italian design firm Pininfarina. Manufactured between 2005 and 2012, the Saibao was introduced as a mid-range passenger vehicle aimed at urban and suburban use, combining functional design with practical engineering. The vehicle features a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. It was equipped with Mitsubishi-sourced inline-four petrol engines, available in 1.6-liter (4G18) and 1.8-liter (4G93) configurations. These engines were paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, providing sufficient performance for daily commuting needs. Some variants later included semi-automatic options. The Saibao measures 4,434 mm in length, 1,708 mm in width, and 1,471 mm in height, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. The curb weight is approximately 1,180 kg. These dimensions support a stable ride while offering adequate interior space for five passengers. Exterior design reflects Pininfarina’s clean and proportionate styling approach. The body features simple lines, a slightly curved roofline, and a conventional sedan profile. While primarily functional, the styling was considered more refined than that of many domestic competitors at the time. In 2006, a revised version known as the Saibao V was introduced. It offered updated trim, minor design revisions, and additional engine options, aiming to position the model slightly upmarket within the compact sedan segment. The Saibao was also notable for its role in international projects. Its platform was adapted for use in the Coda EV, an electric vehicle developed for the U.S. market and sold between 2012 and 2013. Although discontinued after 2012, the Hafei Saibao remains an example of early collaboration between Chinese manufacturers and established European design firms. It served as a transitional model during a period of growth in China’s automotive industry, combining accessible engineering with externally sourced design expertise.
