The Iso Grifo Spider by Bertone.
The Iso Grifo Spider is a unique open-top sports car developed by the Italian manufacturer Iso Rivolta in collaboration with Carrozzeria Bertone. Introduced in 1964, this one-off prototype was conceived as a convertible counterpart to the Iso Grifo A3/L coupé, showcasing the brand’s commitment to combining Italian design elegance with American engineering prowess. The Spider was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his tenure at Bertone. It featured distinctive styling elements, including side exhaust pipes that ran along the rocker panels, a dual-nostril front fascia, and angled vents in the rear fenders. These design cues set it apart from the production Grifo coupés and highlighted its prototype status. Mechanically, the Iso Grifo Spider was powered by a Chevrolet-sourced V8 engine, consistent with Iso’s practice of utilizing reliable American powertrains. The chassis employed a steel structure with double-wishbone suspension at the front and a De Dion rear axle, providing a balance of performance and comfort. Four-wheel disc brakes and a Salisbury limited-slip differential were also part of its advanced engineering package. The Spider made its debut on the European auto show circuit, including an appearance at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show. Despite its favorable reception, the model did not proceed to mass production, remaining a singular example. Over the years, it changed hands among collectors and was eventually stored for several decades. In recent times, the car has resurfaced, garnering attention for its rarity and historical significance. The Iso Grifo Spider stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of 1960s Italian automotive design, blending aesthetic sophistication with engineering excellence. Its unique status as the sole convertible Grifo prototype makes it a highly coveted piece among classic car enthusiasts and collectors.
