Celebrating the Art of Italian Coachbuilding

JAC J5

The JAC J5 designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The JAC J5 was a compact four-door sedan developed and produced by Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Co., Ltd. between 2011 and 2017. Conceived as part of the company’s strategy to expand its presence in both domestic and international markets, the J5 was notable for its exterior design, which was executed in collaboration with the Italian firm Pininfarina. The model was also marketed under the designation Heyue Sedan in select markets and served as a precursor to the Sehol A5 within the brand’s evolving product portfolio. The J5 employed a unibody construction with a transverse front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. Engine options included a 1.5-liter inline-four producing approximately 103 horsepower and a 1.8-liter inline-four rated at 132 horsepower. These powertrains were paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The suspension system consisted of MacPherson struts at the front and a dual-link independent configuration at the rear, offering a balance between ride comfort and road stability appropriate to its class. Dimensionally, the vehicle measured 4,590 mm in length, 1,765 mm in width, and 1,465 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,710 mm. These proportions provided a relatively spacious cabin for a vehicle in the compact segment. The exterior design, carried out by Pininfarina in cooperation with JAC’s Turin-based design studio, featured a prominent front grille, sculpted flanks, and a tapering roofline, reflecting the influence of contemporary European styling conventions. The interior accommodated five occupants and was characterized by a symmetrical dashboard layout, accented trim, and available leather upholstery. Standard equipment included dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and power accessories. Structural reinforcements and the use of high-strength steel contributed to occupant protection. In 2014, the J5 received a minor facelift, incorporating revised bumpers and grille, along with refinements to interior materials. Despite the presence of internationally recognized design input and a competitive feature set, the model faced difficulty establishing a strong foothold in key markets. The JAC J5 is representative of a period during which Chinese automakers sought external design expertise to enhance brand perception and competitiveness on a global scale.
