To respond to those who did not see the XJ-S as the worthy heir to the E-Type in 1978 Pininfarina created a prototype that echoed its line while using contemporary mechanics. The XJ-S’s 5.3 liter V12 engine produced 284 hp and was mated to an automatic gearbox. Despite sharing the same floor with the XJ-S, the XJ Spider Pininfarina was shorter, wider and lower than the XJ-S, which gave it a sportier appearance. Despite everything, the car remained a prototype and never went into production.
