Vehicle Overview

The Lancia Appia Francis Lombardi is a coachbuilt variant of the Lancia Appia saloon, produced during the model’s second series (1956–1959) by Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi. Based in Vercelli, Italy, Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi was established in 1947 by Carlo “Francis” Lombardi, a former aviator turned automobile designer. The firm became known for its custom-bodied vehicles, frequently based on Fiat and Lancia mechanical underpinnings. In the mid-1950s, Lancia promoted limited collaborations with Italian coachbuilders to create special versions of the Appia Berlina. The objective of this initiative was to explore design variations that could appeal to a broader market while potentially influencing future production designs. Nine coachbuilders participated in this project, including notable firms such as Touring, Vignale, Zagato, and Francis Lombardi. These commissions yielded a variety of stylistic interpretations of the Appia, each incorporating distinctive exterior and interior elements. The Francis Lombardi interpretation of the Appia introduced modest yet refined design enhancements. These included revised grilles, additional chrome detailing, and unique trim applications. Although the vehicle’s mechanical layout—comprising a 1.1-liter V4 engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration—remained consistent with standard factory models, the aesthetic changes provided a more upscale appearance. Interior appointments were occasionally upgraded to reflect higher levels of comfort and craftsmanship, aligning with the coachbuilder’s reputation for attention to detail. Production of these modified Appia models was limited, with units priced approximately 12% to 18% higher than their standard counterparts. This price premium reflected the bespoke nature of the coachwork and the added value perceived by customers seeking individualized vehicles. The introduction of the Appia’s third series in 1959 marked the end of this coachbuilding experiment, as Lancia began to incorporate many of the stylistic innovations from these special editions into its standard production. The Lancia Appia Francis Lombardi is considered a notable example of mid-20th century Italian coachbuilding. It illustrates the collaborative dynamics between manufacturers and independent designers during a transitional period in the automotive industry, when personalization and stylistic experimentation played a significant role in vehicle development.
