Lancia Astura Cabriolet Royal Aerodinamico

The Lancia Astura Cabriolet Royal Aerodinamico by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Lancia Astura Cabriolet Royal Aerodinamico by Pininfarina was a singular example of prewar Italian coachbuilding, produced in 1934 on the third series Astura chassis. The model represented a synthesis of engineering refinement and stylistic experimentation, embodying the emerging influence of aerodynamic principles in luxury automobile design during the interwar period. The Astura Series III chassis featured a narrow-angle V8 engine of 2,972 cc, a 19-degree design developed in-house by Lancia. The engine produced approximately 82 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox. The chassis retained Lancia’s independent sliding-pillar front suspension, with a live rear axle supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking was provided by mechanically operated drums on all four wheels. Coachwork was executed by Carrozzeria Pininfarina as a two-door cabriolet distinguished by pronounced aerodynamic solutions. The grille was inclined and seamlessly integrated into the bonnet line, while the rear fenders were enclosed with spats, reflecting the contemporary interest in streamlining. The vehicle was finished in a two-tone scheme, with the lighter color once marked, in other examples, by a wing-shaped decorative moulding, here intentionally omitted in favor of a cleaner surface treatment. The body design also reflected broader aesthetic directives of the period. Under the Fascist regime, Italian coachbuilders were encouraged—implicitly and at times explicitly—to develop a national style that distanced itself from French flamboyance and ornamentation. This unique Lancia Astura Cabriolet Royal Aerodinamico was presented at the 1934 Salons of Paris and London, underlining its role as a showcase model. It won its class at the 1934 Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa Olmo, Lake Como. It is believed to have been acquired thereafter by a private Austrian or German collector. No further examples were built, and specific chassis documentation remains unverified.
