Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin

The Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin was produced from 1998 to 2006. The suffix Pinin which is part of the model name derives from the abbreviation of Pininfarina, the historic coachbuilder responsible for creating the design of the small off-road vehicle.

Vehicle Overview

The Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin was produced by Pinininfarina in its Bairo plant since July 1999 for the European market. The other production plants were located in Japan and Brazil. It is a compact version of the Pajero, classifiable between Mini SUVs and off-roader. From the SUVs it inherits the modern and sympathetic styling while from the off-roaders it inherits the chassis with side members and the excellent mobility even on the most difficult surfaces with the possibility of manual insertion of 4-position all-wheel drive with differential lock and reduced gears called Super Select 4WD. The Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin debuted in Japan in June 1998 in the three-door version with a wheelbase of 2.280 meters while the five-door model with a wheelbase lengthened to 2.540 meters debuted in August of the same year. The Japanese model is produced at the Nagoya factory and named Pajero iO while in export markets the name was changed to Pajero Pinin because the suffix iO was similar to the 1.0 wording that indicates a 1.0-liter engine and which the car does not use. The European model called precisely Pajero Pinin debuted at the Geneva auto show in March 1999. The engines offered were a 114-hp 1.8, a 120-hp direct-injection 1.8, and a 129-hp 2.0, all of which were gasoline-powered.[5] (NB. GDI versions only, MPI versions are 4×4 permanent drive with no creeper). The compact Pajero was also crash-tested by EuroNCAP, which awarded it 3 stars for automotive safety in 2003. In June 2000, a sport version called the Pajero iO TR went on sale in Japan, equipped with the 1.8 (4G93) four-cylinder GDI Turbo gasoline engine with intercooler delivering 160 horsepower and 220 Nm of maximum torque at 3500 rpm and paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and Super Select 4WD-i all-wheel drive. This version was available only with a five-door body style.
