Monteverdi High Speed 375 C

The Monteverdi High Speed 375 C Spider.

Vehicle Overview

The Monteverdi High Speed 375 C is a rare luxury convertible automobile produced in limited numbers by the Swiss manufacturer Monteverdi in 1971. Distinguished by its synthesis of Swiss engineering, Italian design, and American mechanical power, the 375 C occupies a unique position in the history of European grand touring vehicles. Its production was limited to only six units, underscoring its exclusivity and significance as a collector’s item. Derived from the Monteverdi High Speed 375 S coupé, the 375 C was based on a shortened chassis, offering a cabriolet form that retained the performance ethos of its closed-roof counterpart while introducing an added dimension of open-top motoring. The bodywork was designed and constructed by Carrozzeria Fissore of Savigliano, Italy. It featured stylistic elements such as rectangular taillights sourced from the Alfa Romeo Giulia, replacing the triple round units found on the coupé. This alteration, while subtle, contributed to a distinctive rear aesthetic. The powertrain consisted of a Chrysler-supplied 7.2-litre RB-series V8 engine, delivering approximately 340 horsepower and 573 Nm of torque. Transmission options included a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic and a four-speed manual gearbox. Performance figures, according to period claims, included a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. These numbers, coupled with a refined chassis and luxurious interior, placed the 375 C among the most capable and comfortable touring cars of its era.  One example was notably adapted for a paraplegic customer, featuring a rotating seat and hand-operated controls. Another was later converted into the prototype Monteverdi Palm Beach in 1975. Despite its limited production, the 375 C exemplifies the Monteverdi philosophy of merging bespoke craftsmanship with potent performance. It stands today as a testament to the brief yet ambitious efforts of the Monteverdi marque to compete with established European luxury manufacturers such as Ferrari, Maserati, and Aston Martin. Owing to its rarity, elegance, and mechanical robustness, the High Speed 375 C remains a highly sought-after piece of automotive history.
